TRENDS IN THE CHOICE OF GREETINGS TO EXPRESS POLITENESS

Greetings for the beginning and end of any speech communication are of particular importance for the positive tonality of the communicative message between interlocutors, serve to express politeness through the application of conventional etiquette formulas recommended by speech etiquette, and perform the function of affirming the social significance of the speaker. The greetings contain both traditional Bulgarian greetings and new forms corresponding to the contemporary world view of the Bulgarians. The aim of this paper is to determine the preference in the choice of greeting formulas for expressing politeness depending on the sociolinguistic factor of age as well as on the presence or absence of familiarity between the partners in the speech interaction. The study used part of a survey conducted with a web-based electronic form in Google Form, subjected to statistical processing using the data analysis tools of spreadsheet application software. Two of the questions related only to greetings to begin speech communication are included. The obtained data show that the age of the interlocutors has a significant influence on greeting for the beginning of speech communication. With familiar interlocutors of approximately similar age, the most preferred greeting is Hello, regardless of the age of the addressee. Familiar participants in speech interaction, to an older addressee, most often use the neutral greeting Good Morning/Good Day/Good Evening. A slight restraint from the choice of this greeting is noted among addressees aged 18 to 25 and 46 to 60. The determining factor of familiarity in the choice of greeting is also confirmed.
