Abstract

Over the last few years, drug use among children and young people has been increasing. As a result, not only the individual is affected, but also families and even the whole society. Although drug addiction is observed among people of almost all ages, it is more dangerous for school-aged children in terms of the consequences.
The marginalization of drug-addicted students deepens the existing problem. Considering the issue from the perspective of children's rights, the "Principle of Substance Abuse Prevention for early childhood" is included in the convention, which has also been adopted by Bulgaria.
In this context the articles in law - "Right to life, survive and development", "Right to access to health care services" and "Right of access to an adequate standard of living” are the rights that children have in relation to their protection from substance addiction or their rehabilitation. Understanding the symptoms of addiction in childhood is very important for preventive and rehabilitation approaches.
In solving this problem, it is important to focus on the reasons, to assess the effects and raise awareness of the solution proposals. According to the available reports in general, in the country, the rate of substance addiction in students has started to increase.
The current study uses a model of causation that aims to determine the influence of demographic characteristics as risk factors associated with drug use by children, as well as the protective factors that have the potential to prevent the problem behavior. Differences between children who use drugs and those who do not were determined by a questionnaire and χ 2 (chi-square) calculation. A logistic analysis of the conducted questionnaire was performed to determine some of the reasons for drug use.
The main conclusion we draw is: The friend groups that the children and young people have created in the environment they live should be reached and carry out preventive actions about group dynamics. Local youth centers and welfare homes should create groups and friendships especially with children problem behavior, in order to adopt the social norms and values.
