Abstract

Educational excursions are an organizational form of teaching that is carried out outside the school classroom and that, through its organizational form, provides an incentive for the education of students, as well as an attractive, inspiring and motivating environment for them. Students enjoy the privilege of free choice, research activities, free time, change of place of organizing classes and therefore gladly accept these types of learning. On the other hand, teachers take on great responsibility and invest a lot of time in preparing for the implementation of educational excursions, which raises the question of whether they share the intensity of motivation for their implementation with the students. The teacher takes on the role of creating conditions in which all the advantages of educational excursions will be used and which will enable students to enjoy their benefits. Effective organization of educational excursions in practice ensures the acquisition of functional and interdisciplinary knowledge, as well as the development of students’ cognitive, practical and social skills. Given the above characteristics and values of educational excursions, in this paper we aim to point out the specifics of the current practice in this area. The main aim of the research was to identify the features of the existing practice of implementing educational excursions, but also to identify teachers' views on how this implementation should be carried out. Since the teacher figure during the implementation of educational excursions was highlighted as essential, the research sample consisted of 224 teachers from primary and secondary schools. Comparative data analysis revealed a discrepancy, whereby the inconsistency between the real and desired practice occurs when it comes to: the educational character of teaching excursions, the organization of excursions that encourages the development of specific skills, abilities and habits in students, as well as the connection between the content of educational excursions and the curriculum. The results of the research also raised the question of the educational nature of student excursions, i.e. the uncertainty of the respondents regarding the contribution of excursions to the educational tasks of teaching was determined. The subject area of the teacher influenced the difference in attitudes about the characteristics of the existing excursion implementation practice. In response to the results obtained, the importance of higher and quality pedagogical and didactic initial education was pointed out, which would enable teachers to put educational excursions into the function of encouraging optimal students’ development.
