CONTEMPORARY SIGNIFICANCE AND PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD THE ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS OF THE THIRD BULGARIAN KINGDOM

Abstract

The report examines the contemporary significance of the architectural monuments from the period of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom and public attitudes toward them. These architectural monuments are an essential part of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage, reflecting processes of modernization, national identity, and European influence. They encompass a wide range of urban planning projects, public buildings, palaces, military structures, religious, and residential complexes that play a key role in the development and urbanization of Bulgarian cities. Built during a period of intensive national construction, these architectural monuments embody the ideas of statehood, modernization, and European influence on Bulgarian architecture. Perceived as symbols of historical continuity, they hold significant cultural, aesthetic, and social value, yet they are also subject to varying public reactions—ranging from active preservation to neglect and even destruction. The study is based on an analysis of state policies regarding the preservation of architectural heritage, as well as the role of non-governmental organizations, civic movements, and media campaigns in raising public awareness about their importance and conservation. Successful examples of restoration and adaptation of such monuments to contemporary urban and cultural needs are examined, as well as cases of neglect, inappropriate use, and demolition. The report analyzes the attitudes of different social groups toward these architectural sites. In this context, it explores the role of education, cultural policies, and the tourism potential of architectural monuments in shaping public perceptions of them. In conclusion, the report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy for the preservation, socialization, and promotion of the architectural heritage of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom. It highlights the opportunities for its integration into the modern urban environment and the development of tourism, as well as the role of the state and society in its protection. These monuments not only preserve historical memory but also offer potential for cultural and economic development, necessitating a conscious and responsible approach toward them. The architectural monuments from this period not only represent the stylistic and structural development of Bulgaria but also carry cultural, historical, and national values that deserve attention and care in the context of contemporary global development.
