Abstract

Urbanization, the increasingly rapid distancing of man from nature, the consumer society in which we live, the economic and social changes of modern times have necessitated the application of the basic principles of sustainable development in various spheres (including education).
Sustainable development represents a logical response to global ecological, social and economic challenges on a global scale. Referring to the definition of the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development from the report “Our Common Future” (1987), sustainable development should meet the present needs of humanity without taking away resources necessary for future generations. In the presented article, sustainable development is interpreted as a multi-layered concept that encompasses traditional understandings of the relationship between man and the world around him, viewing them through the prism of ecological, social and economic competence.
Education for sustainable development aims to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies that help build a sustainable future. Therefore, the emphasis is placed on the possibility of integrating the acquired ecological, social and economic knowledge in real situations. Respectively, education for sustainable development determines a transition from teaching to learning, aimed at building responsible individuals who are able to predict the consequences of their actions.
The integration of education for sustainable development should begin at an early stage. This, in turn, poses a number of challenges for educators:
• lack of time in planned lessons;
• lack of resources;
• free access to methodological resources;
• selection of effective methods, approaches, techniques.
The article emphasizes the need for the application of effective approaches in primary school, which help in the implementation of education for sustainable development. A brief theoretical overview of each of the approaches is made, as well as its advantages in implementing education for sustainable development are highlighted.
