PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT "ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION STRATEGY FOR WRITTEN HERITAGE"

The report presents the project “Environmentally Sustainable Conservation Strategy for Written Heritage”, which aims to develop and implement innovative, environmentally friendly methods for the diagnosis, conservation, restoration and digitization of written artifacts. The project is based on an interdisciplinary approach that combines physicochemical analysis, nanotechnology, bioremediation and digitization for the long-term preservation of written cultural heritage.
Given the serious challenges associated with the destruction of historical manuscripts, archival documents and rare books, the project focuses on chemical degradation, microbiological damage, inappropriate storage conditions and limited access. By applying sustainable technologies, the project aims to offer ecological solutions to these problems.
The expected results of the project “Environmentally Sustainable Conservation Strategy for Written Heritage” will contribute to the better preservation, access and socialization of written cultural heritage. The project will provide innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for the long-term protection of valuable historical documents and manuscripts, while increasing expert capacity in the field of conservation and restoration. The project will implement new, environmentally friendly materials to replace traditional chemical compounds used in conservation with a focus on minimizing invasiveness and preserving the authenticity, long-term protection and stability of written artifacts, while also being safe for the environment.
It is part of the national and European research priorities and meets the requirements of the National Strategy for the Development of Scientific Research in Bulgaria 2017-2030, the Creative Europe, Horizon Europe and UNESCO Memory of the World programmes.
The methodology includes non-invasive analytical techniques, biodegradable conservation agents. The expected results are the development of a mobile laboratory for diagnostics and conservation, the application of nanotechnologies in conservation and the standardization of sustainable conservation methods.
In addition to its scientific contribution, the project has a key cultural and social significance. Through cooperation with Bulgarian and international institutions, the project will contribute to the enrichment of cultural identity and the strengthening of international scientific exchange.
The implementation of the set goals and objectives will contribute not only to the preservation of cultural identity, but also to the creation of scientific standards and methodologies that can be applied at the international level.
In the context of dynamic technological development and climate change, the project offers sustainable solutions that will guarantee the future of written cultural heritage, while at the same time improving the scientific, educational and public value of these invaluable documents.
