STUDY ON THE BEHAVIOR OF PATIENTS WITH FULL POLYMER DENTURES AT THE FACULTY OF DENTAL MEDICINE, MEDICAL UNIVERSITY – SOFIA

The oral hygiene habits of a representative sample of patients from the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Sofia Medical University were studied, and a summary evaluation of the behavior and awareness of the surveyed patients was derived. Thirty questionnaires were analyzed, filled out by patients who had full dentures, with questions designed to extract the necessary information for the study. The analysis of the responses from the survey was carried out at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Sofia Medical University. The majority of patients with full dentures are between 61 and 75 years old. Sixty-eight percent of the patients in the study are overweight (36%) or obese (32%), while only 29% have a normal (healthy) body weight. Three percent of the respondents are underweight. It was found that the initial fitting of full dentures is required relatively early, around the age of 56. By the age of 62, most patients had one set of dentures, and by around 71 years, they had more than two sets of dentures. All patients who already have dentures (93% of the surveyed) report cleaning them. Seventy-seven percent of the patients clean their dentures daily, with 27% specifying that they clean them once a day, and 30% clean them two or more times a day. The study data shows that 73% clean their dentures after eating. The most common method of cleaning dentures is with a brush and soap or with a brush and toothpaste (39%). Only 3% of patients clean their dentures with water alone. The number of patients who use mouthwashes is very small (only 17%), and the number of patients who disinfect their dentures is about the same as those who do not disinfect them. A very small number of respondents (7%) use antibacterial solutions for storing their dentures, with the vast majority (93%) storing them in a container with water. There is a need to raise patient awareness regarding hygiene, prosthesis disinfection, and good intraoral health through improved communication between patients and dental practitioners, informational campaigns, and other measures.
