Abstract

The role of occupational therapy in dementia prevention and care is increasingly recognized as a crucial aspect of promoting health and well-being in older adults. Occupational therapy aims to improve the independence and quality of life for individuals with dementia by engaging them in meaningful activities. Occupational therapy interventions are particularly effective in enhancing the ability of patients to perform daily tasks, such as self-care and home maintenance, which are essential for community participation. By focusing on the individual’s needs, preferences, and the environment, Occupational therapy seeks to mitigate the functional decline associated with dementia and support caregivers in managing the challenges of caregiving. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of dementia prevention, and occupational therapy is positioned as a key strategy in achieving this goal through its client-centered approach. By addressing both the physical and emotional needs of the patient, occupational therapy interventions reduce caregiver burden and improve mental health outcomes for both patients and caregivers. Furthermore, occupational therapy contributes to a comprehensive rehabilitation approach that can significantly delay the progression of dementia and enhance the overall well-being of older adults. This presentation will explore the therapeutic tools and methodologies employed in occupational therapy for dementia prevention and management, including various assessment techniques and intervention strategies. The aim is to showcase the profound impact of occupational therapy in promoting active aging, improving functional independence, and supporting dementia caregivers.
