Abstract

Acquired dysarthria is a communication disorder that can arise as a result of various etiological factors and affect speech to varying degrees. Dysarthria includes a group of speech disorders resulting from disturbances in muscle control due to damage to the central or peripheral nervous system, which have led to weakness, slowness, incoordination, or altered muscle tone characterizing the activity of the speech mechanism. Different definitions of dysarthria have been described in the literature in Western and Eastern speech therapy. Four main approaches aimed at the study of dysarthria are presented: clinical (neurological), linguistic, neuropsychological, and psycho-pedagogical. The purpose of this report is to present the similarities and differences in the description and classification of the disorder and to outline the main distinguishing speech characteristics of the individual forms of dysarthria. The definitions that are most often found in the publications of a number of scientists in the field of speech therapy are presented, as well as one of the most cited classifications of dysarthria. Тhe consolidated findings facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the disorder and its effects on communicative functioning.
