PATIENT PREPARATION FOR COLORECTAL SURGERY IN THE DEPARTMENT

Abstract

Colorectal surgery, involving complex operations on the colon and rectum, is recognized as one of the most intricate types of abdominal surgery. These surgeries are typically indicated due to various medical conditions such as tumor formations, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, polyps, diverticulitis, or other conditions that require surgical intervention for proper management. While the proficiency of the surgical team is crucial, the success of these procedures is not solely dependent on the surgical technique but also on comprehensive preoperative preparation. Adequate preoperative preparation, which encompasses medical, nutritional, psychological, and informational support, is critical in optimizing surgical outcomes, reducing complications, and promoting faster recovery post surgery.
This study aims to assess the current practices in preparing patients for colorectal surgery in a hospital setting, with a specific focus on the adherence to contemporary protocols such as the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines. ERAS protocols are evidence based practices developed to reduce the physiological stress caused by surgery and accelerate recovery. These protocols emphasize various aspects of patient care, including optimizing preoperative nutrition, early mobilization post surgery, minimizing opioid use for pain management, and improving fluid and electrolyte balance. The study also investigates the psychological state of patients prior to the surgery, addressing common issues such as anxiety, fear, and uncertainty, as well as their understanding of the surgical procedure and postoperative recovery expectations.
In addition, the study explores the level of patient education provided in terms of preoperative care and the clarity of communication between healthcare providers and patients. By examining how well these ERAS protocols are integrated into current clinical practices, the study aims to identify gaps in implementation, areas of improvement, and possible barriers to full protocol adherence. The findings will contribute to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of preoperative care, improving patient satisfaction, and ultimately leading to better clinical outcomes. This research will also provide actionable recommendations for healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, and policymakers to optimize colorectal surgical care, ensuring a holistic approach to patient well being before, during, and after surgery.
Through a combination of qualitative interviews and quantitative analysis, this research will offer valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of current patient preparation practices and propose strategies for improvement, ultimately fostering a more patient centered and evidence based approach to colorectal surgery.
