Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the anesthesiological preparation and postoperative care provided to patients undergoing nephrectomy at the Intensive Care Unit of the Clinical Hospital ‘8th September’ during the year 2024. The primary purpose of this research is to comprehensively assess how different anesthetic techniques and nursing care protocols influence patient safety, recovery trajectories, and overall treatment outcomes following nephrectomy surgeries. The methodology involved a retrospective observational analysis of medical records from 50 patients treated in the ICU, including 26 males and 24 females. Detailed data were collected on patient demographics, types of anesthesia administered—general versus regional—pre-existing comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and chronic renal insufficiency, as well as surgical intervention specifics and clinical outcomes. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and comparative tests to identify significant differences between groups based on anesthesia type and other clinical parameters. The results indicated that 80% of the patients underwent surgery under general anesthesia, reflecting the complexity and risk level associated with these interventions. The mortality rate was 4%, with fatalities primarily occurring in older patients presenting with multiple comorbid conditions and postoperative complications. Nursing staff played an essential role in ongoing patient monitoring, including vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, and temperature. Their involvement extended to the management of postoperative care protocols, timely communication with physicians about clinical changes, and providing crucial psychological support to patients and their families. These nursing interventions significantly contributed to the early identification and management of complications, thus improving patient safety and outcomes. The study concludes that anesthesiological preparation and nursing care are vital components for ensuring safe and effective nephrectomy procedures. Recommendations arising from this research emphasize the need for standardized anesthesia protocols, continuous professional education for healthcare staff, and the integration of multidisciplinary teamwork throughout the perioperative period. Additional findings highlight the importance of sufficient resource allocation, clear communication channels among medical teams, and rapid response capabilities to urgent clinical situations. This research provides a solid foundation for future studies aimed at optimizing perioperative care strategies and enhancing the quality of healthcare services provided to patients undergoing complex surgical treatments such as nephrectomy.
