Abstract

Тhe article examines the importance of developing natural science competencies in preschool children as a key element of modern education.
The study emphasizes that the quality training of future educators is strategically important for the development of critical thinking, observation, and skills for interpreting natural phenomena.
The aim of the study is to examine the views of students future teachers on the development of natural science competences in preschool children.
The tasks to be addressed in the study are:
• to reveal the theoretical aspects of the development of natural science competences in preschool children;
• to present the views of students future educators on the role of education for sustainable development in the context of developing natural science competencies in preschool age;
• to analyze the results obtained.
The study was conducted among 81 students majoring in education at Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov Burgas State University in Burgas, Republic of Bulgaria, through an anonymous survey after completion of the course "Developing Natural Science and Social Competencies in Kindergarten." The main focus is on the topic of sustainable development and its place in university education.
The results show that 87% of students consider the study of the course "Education for Sustainable Development in Kindergarten and Primary School" to be necessary.
They argue this with the need to shape values in children, prepare them for global challenges, develop pedagogical competencies, and personal motivation.
However, 46% of respondents describe themselves as "somewhat" familiar with the concept of sustainable development, which highlights the need for more in depth and interdisciplinary training.
The article also analyzes the definitions and interpretations of the concept of "natural science competence" according to various authors and European documents.
It emphasizes that this competence includes not only knowledge but also attitudes, ethical responsibility, and commitment to sustainable development.
In conclusion, the role of good academic training for future teachers is emphasized as a prerequisite for building an educational environment that encourages observation, experimentation, and understanding of natural processes. This contributes to the early formation of environmental awareness and scientific curiosity in children.
