THE REGULATORY FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATIVE EFFICACY: A BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL FRAMEWORK

Abstract

Contemporary educational environments increasingly emphasize the importance of functional participation and communicative effectiveness as key outcomes of learning and development. However, research and practice often approach communication in isolation from underlying regulatory processes, particularly those related to bodily and sensory functioning. This article explores the role of bodily and sensory regulation as a foundational component for communicative effectiveness in learning contexts, adopting a holistic and bio-psycho-social perspective. Drawing on contemporary developmental and ecological theories, the study conceptualizes regulation not merely as a physiological or behavioral mechanism, but as a dynamic process that enables engagement, attention, interaction, and adaptive participation in educational activities.
The paper argues that effective communication emerges from the interaction between regulatory capacities, environmental conditions, and learning demands, rather than from isolated skill acquisition. Using a conceptual and integrative framework informed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY), the article examines how bodily and sensory regulation supports participation, social interaction, and functional communication in diverse learning settings. Particular attention is given to the transition from regulation to active engagement, highlighting the interdependence between sensory processing, self-regulation, and communicative functioning.
The findings contribute to the understanding of communication as a functional and contextual phenomenon and underline the need for coordinated and holistic approaches in educational and support systems. The article concludes by discussing implications for learning design, assessment practices, and inclusive educational policies, emphasizing the value of integrated frameworks that bridge regulation, participation, and communication
