ACUTE PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE IN PATIENTS AFTER CONJUNCTIVITIS ELECTRICA

Abstract

Conjunctivitis electrica, also known as ultraviolet keratoconjunctivitis or photokeratitis, is an acute
inflammatory condition affecting the ocular surface after excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The condition
most commonly occurs in occupation al environments such as electric arc welding without adequate eye protection.
Although the disease is usually temporary, the sudden onset of severe ocular pain, photophobia and blurred vision
may provoke significant psychological distress. The aim of this study was to analyze clinical manifestations and
psychological reactions among patients treated for conjunctivitis electrica at the Ophthalmology outpatient
department of the Clinical Hospital in Stip. The study included 80 patients diagnosed during a six month period.
Ophthalmological examination included visual acuity testing, slit lamp examination and fluorescein staining to
evaluate corneal epithelial damage. In addition to clinical symptoms, psychological reactions such as anxiety, feat of
vision loss and sleep disturbance were evaluated through patient interviews. The results showed that photophobia,
tearing and ocular pain were the most common symptoms reported by patients. Anxiety was present in nearly half of
the examined patients due to fear of per manent visual damage. Appropriate therapy combined with reassurance and
explanation of the condition resulted in rapid recovery in most cases. The findings highlight the importance of
recognizing the psychological component associated with acute ocular inj uries. A holistic approach including
medical treatment and psychological support can significantly improve patient outcomes.
