ANALYSIS OF INDICATIONS AND COMPLICATIONS IN THERAPEUTIC PLASMAPHERESIS

Abstract

Therapeutic plasmapheresis is an extracorporeal blood purification technique used for the selective removal of pathogenic substances from plasma and represents an important therapeutic modality in modern clinical medicine. It is widely applied in the treatment of autoimmune, neurological, hematological, and nephrological diseases, where circulating autoantibodies, immune complexes, inflammatory cytokines, and various toxins play a key role in disease progression and clinical deterioration. By effectively removing these pathological components from the circulation, plasmapheresis contributes to rapid clinical improvement, stabilization of vital parameters, and reduction of disease severity, particularly in acute, severe, and life-threatening conditions where conventional therapy may be insufficient.
The aim of this study is to analyze the indications and complications associated with the use of therapeutic plasmapheresis in clinical practice, as well as to evaluate its overall safety, efficacy, and clinical relevance. The study was conducted as a retrospective descriptive analysis based on medical documentation from 50 patients treated with this therapeutic method over a defined time period. The collected data included demographic characteristics such as age and gender, underlying primary diagnoses, specific clinical indications for plasmapheresis, number and frequency of performed procedures, occurrence, type, and severity of complications, as well as overall treatment outcomes and patient response to therapy.
The results of the study showed that the majority of patients tolerated the procedure well, with no occurrence of severe or life-threatening complications, thereby confirming the generally favorable safety profile of therapeutic plasmapheresis. The most frequently observed adverse effects included transient electrolyte disturbances, mild to moderate allergic reactions related to plasma or replacement fluids, and short-term episodes of hypotension occurring during or after the procedure. In most cases, these complications were temporary, clinically manageable, and successfully treated with appropriate supportive measures and continuous monitoring.
Furthermore, the results indicate that careful patient selection, strict adherence to standardized clinical protocols, and continuous monitoring of hemodynamic and biochemical parameters significantly reduce the risk of complications. The presence of trained and experienced healthcare personnel plays a key role in early recognition, timely management, and prevention of potential adverse events, thereby ensuring a higher level of patient safety and improved therapeutic outcomes.
In conclusion, therapeutic plasmapheresis is a highly effective and relatively safe extracorporeal therapeutic modality with broad clinical indications. Its therapeutic benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks when performed under controlled clinical conditions with appropriate monitoring. Continuous education of healthcare personnel, ongoing improvement of clinical protocols, and further large-scale studies are recommended in order to optimize its safety, efficacy, and long-term clinical outcomes
