GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN DISCOURSES ON ALBANIANS IN THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAVEL WRITING

This study examines the discourses of German and Austrian travel writers on Albanian territories during the first two decades of the twentieth century, focusing on the aims, content, and impact of their writings. Through an analytical and comparative approach, the paper explores how initial perceptions—often shaped by stereotypes and literary representations—evolved through direct encounters with the Albanian reality. Particular attention is given to figures such as Karl May, Maria Amelie von Godin, and Friedrich Markgraf, who represent different perspectives on Albania. The findings reveal that, alongside negative and orientalist discourses, more objective and empathetic narratives emerged, contributing to a deeper understanding of Albanian culture and society. The study demonstrates that travel writing played a significant role in cultural mediation and in shaping the image of Albania in the German-speaking world.
