Technological progress is leading to the development and introduction of innovative approaches, methods and tools within the Bulgarian education system. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) into the learning process poses new challenges for teachers’ professional training and qualifications. This article presents the results of a didactic test and a questionnaire conducted amongst 308 primary school teachers from Bulgaria, following a short term training course on Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence in Primary Education Creativity, Teaching and Innovation held in March 2026. The aim is to examine how the assimilation of definitions of AI and AR influences knowledge of their key characteristics. The results of the test on AI show that the strongest influence is observed in terms of understanding the main function of generative AI (F=97.10), as well as the main purpose of AI (F=73.70). Similar results are reported for the questions on AR grasping the concept is an important factor for a further understanding of the specifics of the technology.
The results of the survey show an exceptionally high rating of the impact of the training course on primary school teachers’ motivation to work with AI and AR. Most of the teaching professionals surveyed (87 %) expressed the highest level of agreement, which indicates that the training had a strongly motivating effect.
