Abstract

Optometric consultations usually focus on correction of refractive errors, specification of prescribed glasses and contact lenses, screening of visual acuity and other parameters. Often, due to relatively direct access, people with various eye complaints also consult an optometrist. As specialists with a university education - bachelor's or master's degree, they are trained to recognize deviations from the usual symptoms and serious eye diseases. They are qualified for quite a few diagnostic approaches and are instructed to refer patients to an eye specialist to specify the problem, treat and preserve visual functions. The conditions requiring consultation with an ophthalmologist and can be identified by an optometrist are divided into those subjects to planned, urgent and emergency referral. They differ according to the patient's complaints; the time and manner of manifestation - acute or protracted; the symptoms, also according to the anatomical involvement, the expected prognosis and the objective finding.
Joint work between ophthalmologists and optometrists is extremely beneficial because it contributes to the protection and preservation of the eye health of patients. It is necessary for optometrists to be trained and improved with the current indications for ophthalmological consultation, modern approaches to examination and referral to a specialist without delay, the goal being not to miss alarming findings and emergency conditions. Due to the workload, the serious commitment of ophthalmologists to medical and surgical activities, professional collaboration with optometrists is very sought after, useful and necessary, especially in the direction of prevention. Optometric technical assistance and competencies for multiple hardware examinations and the implementation of jointly approved algorithms save time and provide better and faster consultations for patients. It is recommended to develop steps for referral to a specialist, supplement them and periodically confirm them. Maintaining and upgrading the clinical knowledge of students and graduate optometrists is an undoubted necessity. Timely care for eye health can save the sight of many patients.
