Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body. The most common type is PAD of the lower extremities, in which blood flow to the legs and feet is reduced. The risk factors for PAD are identical to those in the etiology of coronary artery disease: smoking, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and arterial hypertension.
Objective: The aim of this paper is to present the number of patients treated with PAD in the intensive care unit, as well as the hospital mortality.
Materials and methods: The data were taken retrograde from the internal department of the Public Health Institution City General Hospital “8th September”-Skopje. They are systematized, presented in tables and graphs.
Results: This paper includes 152 patients diagnosed and treated with a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease in the period from 2020 to 2024 in the intensive care unit, in the internal department of the PHI City General Hospital "September 8th" - Skopje. The male gender was slightly more represented, with 77 patients (50.6%). Only 8 patients (5.26%) died during hospitalization. According to the data presented, a large part of the patients were treated with medication, and a smaller part with interventional treatment (angioplasty) and surgical treatment.
Conclusion: Given the increased number of the disease and especially mortality from PAD, special attention should be paid to early prevention and removal of risk factors in order to prevent to the occurrence of PAD. Preventive measures should be implemented by the primary care physician, cardiologists, and nurses through education, organization, and application of preventive measures in order to reduce mortality.
