As global life expectancy increases, the importance of addressing age related health issues is growing, sparking interest in nutritional strategies that promote healthy ageing. Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice, a functional beverage rich in polyphenols and vitamins, is a promising option due to its potent antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties.
This study aimed to investigate the impact of Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice on inflammatory markers in the small intestine wall of aged rats.
Twenty four male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: young controls (YС, aged three months), aged controls (OK, aged 24 months), and aged rats supplemented with 100% Aronia melanocarpa juice (A, 10 ml/kg daily). After the three month supplementation period, samples were collected from the small intestine for immunohistochemical analysis of selected inflammatory cytokines.
The analysis revealed age related variations in inflammatory status, with older animals exhibiting heightened pro
inflammatory activity. Aronia supplementation exerts significant, tissue specific effects on inflammatory cytokine expression in model of naturally aged rats. Ageing was associated with increased IL 1β expression and anti
inflammatory cytokine dysregulation across small intestine wall. Supplementation with Aronia melanocarpa juice partially restored the balance of cytokines by reducing pro inflammatory signalling and enhancing IL 4 and IL 10 expression in small intestine wall.
Regular supplementation with Aronia melanocarpa juice may help counteract age related inflammation by influencing key immune signalling molecules. These results support the potential of Aronia melanocarpa as a functional food with geroprotective and anti inflammatory properties, highlighting its relevance in strategies aimed at mitigating inflammaging and improving gut health during ageing.
Based on the results, it could be recommended that functional beverages such as Aronia melanocarpa be included in the diet to support healthy ageing. Regular Aronia juice supplementation may help to reduce age related inflammation and improve immune regulation. These findings lend weight to the idea of using Aronia melanocarpa as a nutritional tool to reduce inflammation and promote healthy ageing
