INTEGRATED TREATMENT AND HEALTH CARE IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME AND TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, and its incidence is significantly increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM). Diabetes as a chronic metabolic disease contributes to accelerated atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction and increased risk of cardiovascular complications, which makes the treatment of these patients more complex and specific. Modern therapeutic approaches require an integrated and multidisciplinary treatment model that unites cardiological, endocrinological and nursing interventions.
Objective: The paper aims to show the importance of an integrated approach in the treatment and healthcare of patients with ACS and type 2 DM.
Materials and methods: The paper is a retrospective analysis of patients hospitalized with acute coronary syndrome and type 2 DM in the cardiology department of the Clinical Hospital Shtip, for a period of one year.
Results: In 2025, a total of 353 patients with a diagnosis of ACS were hospitalized and treated at the Cardiology Department of the Clinical Hospital of Stip. The largest number (56.66%) were with STEMI, followed by 39.66% with a diagnosis of unstable angina pectoris and only 3.70% with NON-STEMI. Of the total number of patients with ACS, 130 (36.83%) were diagnosed with type 2 DM. During hospitalization, 16 (4.5%) patients, out of the total number of ACS, had newly discovered type 2 DM.
Conclusion: Integrated treatment and health care in patients with acute coronary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus are a key factor in improving clinical outcomes and reducing mortality. The combination of cardiological and endocrinological therapy, together with continuous and individualized nursing care, allows for more effective disease control and prevention of complications.
