TEXTILE WASTE AS INSPIRATION FOR CIRCULAR AND SUSTAINABLE FASHION DESIGN

Abstract

The textile industry is one of the world's most significant manufacturing sectors, but it is also recognized as one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution. Intensive production, the increasingly shorter life cycle of textile products, and mass consumption driven by the fast fashion model have led to a continuous increase in textile waste generation and significant depletion of natural resources. In addition to its high consumption of water and energy, the textile industry produces considerable greenhouse gas emissions, chemical pollution, and large amounts of waste, much of which is disposed of in landfills or incinerated, causing further environmental degradation.
In the Republic of North Macedonia, more than 6,000 tons of textile waste are generated annually, primarily as a result of manufacturing processes in textile factories and garment production facilities. Due to limited opportunities for waste sorting, recycling, and reuse, a significant proportion of this waste ends up in landfills, while companies face substantial costs associated with its storage, transportation, and disposal. This situation highlights the urgent need for more sustainable textile waste management practices and its integration into the principles of the circular economy.
This paper examines textile waste as a valuable resource for the development of circular and sustainable fashion design. The research is based on a comprehensive review of relevant scientific literature, contemporary practices in the fashion industry, and innovative design approaches, including upcycling, zero-waste design, and circular fashion design. Particular attention is given to the potential of transforming textile waste into products with new functional, aesthetic, and economic value, emphasizing creativity and innovation as key drivers of sustainable development.
The findings indicate that textile waste should not be regarded solely as an environmental burden but also as an important resource capable of fostering innovative design concepts, reducing environmental impacts, and promoting more efficient use of materials. The implementation of circular and sustainable fashion design principles contributes to extending the life cycle of textile materials, minimizing waste generation, and creating products with added value. The paper emphasizes the importance of strengthening collaboration among industry, higher education institutions, and the creative sector, as well as raising public awareness of textile waste as a valuable resource for developing innovative, ethical, and environmentally responsible fashion design.
