Abstract

Pregnancy is a normal physiological process and in most cases, with regular monitoring and provision of evidence-based basic clinical care, usually results in the birth of a healthy newborn. Certain conditions that existed before pregnancy or occurred during pregnancy pose a risk to the health of the fetus and/or pregnant women and can lead to undesirable outcomes such as premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, maternal, neonatal or infant death. These conditions primarily include overweight, anemia, hyperglycemia, hypertensive disorders, urogenital infections and intrauterine fetal growth restriction.
By timely recognition of risk factors, through regular gynecological examinations, laboratory analyses, ultrasound examinations and screening tests, it is possible to detect possible complications early and to take appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures. This contributes to reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, as well as to improving pregnancy outcomes.
