In the contemporary educational environment, the development of reading literacy and the promotion of students’ motivation to read represent an important prerequisite for a successful educational process. Reading is not perceived merely as a basic educational skill, but as a complex process that contributes to the development of critical thinking, communication skills, creativity, language competence, and independent learning.
This paper examines the significance of contemporary and interactive approaches to reading instruction, with particular emphasis on their role in engaging students, stimulating their interest, and improving reading comprehension. Special attention is given to creating a stimulating, dynamic, and inclusive environment in which students actively participate in the reading process, reflect on what they have read, and connect the text with their prior knowledge, experiences, and interests.
Reading literacy represents an important foundation for successfully mastering content across different subject areas. By developing the ability to understand, interpret, and critically examine texts, students become capable of identifying important information, drawing conclusions, asking questions, and forming their own opinions. In this way, reading becomes an active process of learning and meaning-making rather than merely the acquisition of textual content.
Motivation to read plays an important role in developing a positive attitude toward books and reading. When students are interested in the content and have opportunities to participate actively, discuss what they have read, and express their opinions, conditions are created for developing lasting interest and positive reading habits. In this process, the teacher has a particularly important role in recognizing students’ diverse needs, abilities, and interests and in creating conditions for their active and independent participation.
The results of the analysis indicate that contemporary approaches to reading instruction can contribute to greater student activity and engagement, better understanding and interpretation of texts, and the development of a positive attitude toward reading. At the same time, they create opportunities for developing self-confidence, creativity, communication skills, and critical thinking.
The paper emphasizes the need for continuous improvement of teaching practice and for creating conditions in which reading is experienced as an active, creative, meaningful, and enjoyable learning process. Developing reading literacy and motivation to read represents a long-term foundation for successful education, independent learning, and the overall development of students.
