Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a major global public health challenge, increasingly affecting the younger population due to sedentary lifestyles and digital technology use. Objective of this articfle is to conduct a comparative analysis of body composition, physical activity, fatigue, sleep quality, and their correlation with MSDs among university students. A cross-sectional cohort study was conducted on 94 university students (31.9% male, 68.1% female) at the University of Sarajevo. Instruments included Anthropometric evaluations, Tanita Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), IPAQ-SF, Standardized Nordic Questionnaire, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Cervical neck discomfort was significantly more prevalent in females (62.5%) than males (30.0%; p=0.003). Statistically significant negative correlations were found between the percentage of muscle mass (ρ = -0.209, p=0.044), total kilograms of muscle mass (ρ = -0.303, p=0.004), REE (ρ = -0.287, p=0.005) and neck pain. Pathological fatigue was strongly associated with neck problems (p=0.005). Poor sleep quality (PSQI) significantly correlated with shoulder (p=0.019) and wrist discomfort(p=0.034).
Localized physical development and lifestyle factors such as sleep degradation and pathological fatigue show strong directional relationships with musculoskeletal structural pain among tertiary, students.
