Abstract

Fractures that occur in the hip area, known as proximal femoral fractures, are frequently observed in older individuals with osteoporosis. These fractures typically happen in the femoral neck or intertrochanteric regions and often necessitate surgical intervention. Among all types of fractures, proximal femur fractures pose the highest risk of mortality, especially among the elderly population. The standard approach for treating these fractures involves surgical procedures, such as IM nail, extra medullary sliding hip screw (SHS), or hip arthroplasty, which are determined based on the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s preferences. In the case of intertrochanteric and sub trochanteric fractures, intramedullary nails are commonly used, while neck fractures may require total hip replacement (THR) or hemiarthroplasty. To obtain a thorough comprehension of the progress made by patients receiving treatment for hip fractures, it is imperative to assess not only their physical condition but also their overall health and social welfare. After undergoing surgery for a hip fracture, it is recommended to prioritize the improvement of nutritional intake, participation in rehabilitation programs both at home and in other setting, and the provision of psychological assistance for individuals grappling with psychosocial difficulties. The effect on an individual’s quality of life who experiences are fracture in the proximal femur can differ depending on various factors such as the severity of the injury, the individual’s overall health, the success of treatment, and the occurrence of any complications. Mobility, particularly among older individuals, can be significantly impacted by proximal femur fractures. Following treatment, patients may experience difficulties in performing everyday activities independently, such as walking, climbing stairs and completing daily tasks. The crucial role of physical therapy and rehabilitation cannot be overstated in improving mobility and restoring function. Patients who undergo an intertan nail procedure for a proximal femur fracture can expect to see significant enhancements in their quality of life. These improvements may include increased stability, reduced pain, reduced risks of complications, faster recovery and preservation of bone strength. However, it is important to note that individual outcomes may vary depending on factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to postoperative rehabilitation programs. It is worth mentioning that a considerable number of older adults face challenges in performing basic activities like bathing, eating and dressing (known as “activities of daily living” or ADLs) following a hip fracture. Many individuals may experience prolonged difficulties with mobility after the injury, which can have a significant impact on their overall well-being. As a result of the decline in their physical health, approximately 20 percent of older adults choose to move to long-term care facilities following a hip fracture, which significantly impact their overall quality of life.
