TO THE PROFILE OF THE BULGARIAN DIASPORA IN EUROPE
Keywords:
Bulgarian diaspora, historical diaspora, contemporary diaspora, EuropeAbstract
The Bulgarian diaspora in Europe has formed over the centuries as a result of political and/or economic reasons. In Bulgarian academia, a diachronic approach is traditionally adopted when discussing these communities: depending on the period of settlement in a foreign environment, two large groups are distinguished – the historical and contemporary diaspora. In addition, the historical Bulgarian diaspora is also viewed from the perspective of ethno-dispersal processes related to the shifting of state borders and the incorporation of traditional Bulgarian territories into other countries. The contemporary diaspora includes the formation of communities, mainly in Central Europe. This diaspora also includes the creation of new Bulgarian communities in Western Europe—Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus—which were formed after 1989 as a result of the radical changes in Eastern Europe, including the opening of borders. The profile of the Bulgarian diaspora in Europe shows a number of similarities in terms of the motives and paths of settlement, as well as their presence in the host countries and the paths of consolidation. At the same time, more direct communication with the country of origin is established. Of interest are institutional forms such as Saturday-Sunday schools, the creation and development of media, and the holiday calendar.
