THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GLOBALIZATION AND THE DIASPORA
Keywords:
diaspora, ethnic communities, diasporization, globalizationAbstract
The present study aims to systematize certain aspects of the development of the diaspora from the perspective of contemporary processes of globalization. The use of the term "diaspora," as researchers point out, is influenced by the development of globalization. First and foremost, the opening of borders and their shifting- the emergence of new states—has an impact on societies. On the one hand, especially after the changes in Eastern Europe after 1989, intensive migration processes to Western countries – Europe and the USA – began. On the other hand, new states were formed after the shifting of borders. An example of this is the birth of new countries after the collapse of the USSR or the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. One of the results of globalization, linked to the movement of large ethnic groups, is the development of the so-called process of diasporization: the creation of new ethnic communities on the territories of foreign host countries. Factors of globalism – political, economic, social, confrontational – activate migration waves and change the demographic composition both in the countries of origin and in the host countries. In turn, ethnic dispersion - both historically and in the present day - is discussed with regard to the state of the historical Bulgarian communities located in Tavria and Zaporizhia. Additional emphasis is placed on the Bulgarian diaspora, on the ethno-integration processes related to approaches to preserving identity and reviving cultural memory.
